I'm reading an article in Mother Jones (yes, it's very far left) in which David Corn argues that the GOP is the Party of White Grievance.  I agree with this and this is exactly what Trumpism is about.  Donald Trump validated White Grievance and, even more, he fueled a fire that made the extreme Right into the Hard Right.  Hard turn to the most extreme vision of conservatism.  Hard policy when dealing with the other whether on immigration or on trade.  Hard consequences for anyone who disagreed.  I don't agree with everything Corn writes.

I disagree, for example, with saying McConnell said he would vote for Trump even though he also blames him for the insurrection at the Capitol.  McConnell actually said he would vote for the nominee.  That he would, in effect, support who the Republican voters elected.  If Democrats supported their nominee, Hillary Clinton would be the president and we'd be having a different conversation -- not necessarily better, just different.

However, the interesting thing in Corn's piece is the polling of Republicans and their bias towards bias.  A fair percent of those polled felt that White people were treated far worse than Black and Hispanic people in this country.  According to the article, 63 percent of those polled believed there was some or a lot of discrimination against White people.  I must admit, there is some truth to what they are saying and we really need to stop discounting how people feel in this country.  If we expect this for people of color, then we certainly should expect it for everyone.

Another thing that is clear, the culture war has to end.  Our fellow Americans aren't the enemy and the political chatter on social media isn't the real world.  While it's fun and entertaining to exist in the virtual world where we can assume an alternate persona a la Ready Player One, our friends and family are in the real world.  Our neighbors and community members are in the real world.  In this country where we accept ideas from a big tent of ideas, everyone's feelings and opinions must count when we make laws.  But a caveat to that is we must make every effort to create a kinder, more inclusive world.  How can anyone be against this idea?
